Microsoft FastTrack is FREE onboarding + deployment guidance included with eligible M365/Azure/D365 subscriptions. FastTrack GUIDES you; a partner DELIVERS. FastTrack covers envisioning + tenant setup + identity + workload activation for standard configurations. FastTrack does NOT cover: custom development, complex migrations, third-party integration, governance framework, GCC High, or ongoing managed services. Best practice: hybrid model — FastTrack handles tenant setup + baseline, partner handles governance + custom work + migration + Copilot rollout. Saves 15-25% vs pure-partner cost.
Microsoft FastTrack is Microsoft's free onboarding + deployment assistance for Microsoft 365, Azure, and Dynamics 365 subscriptions. Included with eligible license SKUs at no extra cost. FastTrack Manager and FastTrack Solution Architect resources help with tenant configuration, identity setup, workload deployment (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, Intune, Defender for Office 365), and adoption best practices. It is a Microsoft-employee-delivered service, not a partner service.
FastTrack scope: (1) Envisioning + planning sessions (typically 4-8 hours across multiple weeks). (2) Tenant setup + core configuration. (3) Identity + directory synchronization from on-premises AD or Azure AD/Entra ID. (4) Workload activation and basic policy configuration for Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Intune. (5) Best-practice documentation and playbooks. (6) Adoption planning support (Microsoft 365 champions program templates, communication kits). It does NOT cover: custom development, complex migrations, third-party integration, governance framework development, or workshop-style deep-dives.
Nine major limits: (1) No hands-on delivery — Microsoft guides you, you do the work. (2) Time-boxed — typically capped at 40-80 hours across the engagement. (3) No custom development or complex configurations. (4) Cannot migrate data from non-Microsoft sources (Google Workspace, Lotus Notes, etc.). (5) No integration with third-party tools. (6) No governance framework development beyond templates. (7) No Copilot governance / Purview configuration beyond basic. (8) Cannot deploy in GCC High or DoD environments. (9) Adoption support is templated, not tailored — Microsoft-branded materials only, not co-branded with your organization.
FastTrack is sufficient when: (1) You have 50-500 users. (2) Straightforward greenfield deployment (no legacy to migrate). (3) Standard Microsoft 365 workloads (email + SharePoint + Teams) without customization. (4) Internal IT team has capacity to do the actual work with Microsoft guidance. (5) No regulatory + compliance requirements beyond baseline. (6) Timeline flexibility (FastTrack availability varies by region + demand). If ALL six criteria fit, FastTrack alone can succeed.
A partner is required when: (1) You need hands-on delivery (partner does the work, not just guidance). (2) Complex migration from non-Microsoft sources (Google Workspace, Lotus Notes, third-party file shares). (3) Custom development (Power Platform apps, custom SharePoint solutions). (4) Regulated-industry compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2, FedRAMP, CMMC, ITAR). (5) Governance framework development (Purview, Copilot governance, sensitivity labels). (6) Change management + adoption tailored to your culture + brand. (7) GCC High or DoD environment deployment. (8) Ongoing managed services after deployment. (9) Copilot rollout with data architecture readiness.
Best practice for many mid-market and enterprise deployments: use FastTrack for tenant setup + baseline configuration, layer partner services for the complex work. Example: FastTrack handles tenant provisioning + identity setup + Exchange Online activation (weeks 1-4). Partner delivers governance framework + Copilot readiness + custom Power Platform apps + migration from non-Microsoft sources (weeks 5-16). Result: leverage free FastTrack resources where they fit, invest partner spend where hands-on expertise is required. Typical savings: 15-25% off pure-partner cost.
EPC Group frequently coordinates with Microsoft FastTrack teams on hybrid engagements. Standard model: (1) EPC Group leads envisioning + architecture + governance design. (2) FastTrack executes tenant setup + basic workload activation on the schedule EPC Group aligns to. (3) EPC Group delivers custom work, migration from non-Microsoft sources, Copilot rollout, compliance framework. (4) EPC Group provides ongoing managed services. This model works because FastTrack activity is documented in the FastTrack Center portal and can be coordinated with an outside partner's SOW.
