Introducing Microsoft Viva Engage: The Team Collaboration Network Within Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Viva Engage (formerly Yammer) is an enterprise social network embedded within Microsoft Teams that connects employees across departments, geographies, and organizational hierarchies. Unlike Teams channels that focus on project-level collaboration within defined groups, Viva Engage creates open communities where employees share knowledge, ask questions, celebrate achievements, and engage with leadership -- building the kind of organizational culture that drives retention and innovation. EPC Group has deployed Viva Engage for enterprises with tens of thousands of employees, designing community structures and governance frameworks that maximize participation while maintaining compliance.

What Is Microsoft Viva Engage?

Viva Engage is the evolution of Yammer, rebranded and deeply integrated into the Microsoft Viva employee experience platform. It provides a social layer within Microsoft 365 that complements the structured collaboration in Teams with informal, community-based communication.

  • Communities - Open or private groups organized by topic, department, location, or interest (e.g., "AI Innovation," "Healthcare Compliance," "Dallas Office")
  • Storyline - A personal feed similar to LinkedIn where employees share updates, insights, and announcements with their followers across the organization
  • Leadership Corner - Dedicated spaces for executives to post updates, run AMAs (Ask Me Anything), and engage with employees directly
  • Answers in Viva - A knowledge-sharing feature powered by AI that routes questions to subject matter experts and builds a searchable knowledge base
  • Campaigns - Structured initiatives with goals, hashtags, and participation tracking for organizational programs

How Viva Engage Works Within Microsoft Teams

Viva Engage is accessible as a standalone app within Teams, bringing the full social network experience into the platform your employees already use every day:

  1. Viva Engage app in Teams - Pinned to the left rail, it provides access to the home feed, communities, storyline, and notifications
  2. Viva Engage tab in channels - Add a Viva Engage community or feed as a tab in any Teams channel for contextual access
  3. Viva Engage web parts in SharePoint - Embed community feeds, highlights, and conversations in SharePoint intranet pages
  4. Notifications - Viva Engage activity notifications appear in the Teams activity feed alongside other Teams notifications
  5. Cross-post - Share content between Viva Engage communities and Teams channels to bridge project teams with broader organizational discussions

Key Features for Enterprise Organizations

Viva Engage offers enterprise-grade features that differentiate it from consumer social platforms:

  • Answers in Viva - AI-powered Q&A that identifies experts, suggests answers, and builds an organizational knowledge base over time
  • Leadership engagement - Leadership Corner, Town Halls, and AMAs give executives a direct communication channel to all employees
  • Campaigns - Launch organizational initiatives with hashtags, goals, publishers, and participation metrics (e.g., "Safety Week," "DEI Awareness Month")
  • Analytics - Engagement metrics including active users, posts, reactions, and community growth available to community admins and network admins
  • Compliance - Viva Engage content is subject to Microsoft 365 retention policies, eDiscovery, data loss prevention (DLP), and information barriers
  • Native mode - Enforces Azure AD identity management and Microsoft 365 group alignment for consistent governance

Setting Up Viva Engage for Your Organization

  1. Verify licensing - Viva Engage core features are included in Microsoft 365 E3/E5 plans. Premium features (Answers in Viva, Leadership Corner, Campaigns) require a Microsoft Viva Suite or Viva Engage license
  2. Ensure Native Mode - Migrate your Yammer network to Native Mode if not already done. This aligns all users, groups, and content with Azure AD and Microsoft 365 Groups
  3. Design community structure - Plan communities by department, location, topic, and interest. Avoid over-creating communities -- start with 10-15 active communities and grow based on demand
  4. Enable in Teams - Ensure the Viva Engage app is included in your Teams app setup policies and pinned for targeted users
  5. Configure moderation - Assign community admins and configure content moderation policies
  6. Launch with leadership - Executive sponsorship is the single most important factor in Viva Engage adoption. Have leaders post regularly from day one

Viva Engage vs. Teams: When to Use Each

A common question we hear from enterprise clients is when to use Viva Engage versus Teams channels. The answer is straightforward:

  • Teams channels - For project-level, task-oriented collaboration within defined groups. Communication is fast-paced, focused, and typically involves a known set of people working toward a specific goal
  • Viva Engage communities - For organizational-wide, topic-based discussions that cross team boundaries. Communication is more reflective, knowledge-sharing oriented, and open to anyone in the organization with interest in the topic
  • Example: The "Marketing Campaign Q1" Teams channel is for the campaign team to execute. The "Marketing Best Practices" Viva Engage community is for all marketers across the company to share insights and learn from each other

Why Choose EPC Group for Viva Engage Deployment

With 29 years of enterprise Microsoft consulting experience, EPC Group approaches Viva Engage as a strategic communication platform, not just another app rollout. We work with internal communications, HR, and IT to design a community structure, governance model, and launch plan that drives measurable employee engagement.

  • Community architecture and governance framework design
  • Native Mode migration for Yammer networks not yet aligned to M365
  • Leadership engagement coaching and executive communication strategy
  • Compliance configuration including retention, DLP, and eDiscovery
  • Adoption measurement with Power BI dashboards tracking engagement KPIs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Viva Engage the same as Yammer?

Viva Engage is the evolution of Yammer. Microsoft rebranded Yammer as Viva Engage and deeply integrated it into the Viva employee experience platform. All existing Yammer communities, content, and settings are preserved. The core experience is the same but enhanced with new features like Storyline, Answers in Viva, Leadership Corner, and Campaigns.

Do I need a separate license for Viva Engage?

Core Viva Engage features (communities, feeds, basic analytics) are included in Microsoft 365 E1, E3, E5, and frontline plans. Premium features -- Answers in Viva, Leadership Corner, Campaigns, and advanced analytics -- require a Microsoft Viva Suite license or standalone Viva Engage license.

Can external users participate in Viva Engage communities?

Viva Engage supports external networks and guest access in certain configurations. External collaboration is available through Azure AD B2B guest access, allowing external partners to participate in specific communities. However, external access must be explicitly configured by an admin and is subject to compliance policies. Most organizations limit external access to specific project or partner communities.

How does Answers in Viva work?

Answers in Viva is a Q&A feature that uses AI to route questions to the right subject matter experts, suggest relevant existing answers, and build a searchable knowledge base over time. When an employee posts a question, the system identifies relevant experts based on their activity and expertise signals. Answered questions are indexed and surfaced for future queries, reducing duplicate questions and accelerating knowledge sharing.

Is Viva Engage content subject to compliance policies?

Yes. When your Yammer network is in Native Mode (required for new deployments), all Viva Engage content is stored in the Microsoft 365 substrate and is subject to the same retention policies, eDiscovery, data loss prevention (DLP), information barriers, and audit logging as other Microsoft 365 content. This is essential for organizations in regulated industries like healthcare and financial services.
