HOUSTON — EPC Group, a Houston-based Microsoft consulting firm founded in 1997, has been named a Top 10 Management Consulting Firm for Q3 2026 by 50Pros, a business-to-business marketplace and directory of agencies and consulting firms. EPC Group placed eighth in the category and received 50Pros' Top Agency Award for the quarter.

The recognition lands in the same quarter the firm published TAR-8, its open 8-Surface Tenant AI Readiness Standard, and rebuilt its Virtual Chief AI Officer (vCAIO) practice around a standing Agent Governance Office. EPC Group says those two pieces of work explain why a firm best known for Power BI, SharePoint, Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft 365 now appears in a management consulting ranking: in 2026, the hardest questions about enterprise AI are management questions.

What did 50Pros recognize, and what does it establish?

50Pros describes itself as a directory that helps businesses find, compare and contact agencies and service providers. According to its own published figures, the company was founded in 2022, operates as a portfolio company of Elian Ventures, and indexes more than 1,600 agencies across 106 service categories. Buyers browse profiles and submit project requests at no cost.

50Pros notified EPC Group of the Q3 2026 Top Agency Award on October 1, 2026, with a ranking of No. 8 of the Top 10 in Management Consulting. The category, which listed 37 firms on October 2, 2026, is public at 50pros.com/hire/management-consulting

EPC Group applies the same rule to this recognition that it applies to every claim it publishes: say what a source establishes and what it does not. A 50Pros placement is a marketplace's ranking of the firms in its own directory. It is an outside signal a buyer can use to build a shortlist. It is not an audit of delivery, and it is a different kind of evidence from verified client reviews, which for EPC Group are published on G2, or from contract records, which the firm publishes in its Evidence Center.

“A management consulting list is not where people expect to find a Microsoft firm, and that is exactly why it is worth a sentence,” said Errin O'Connor, Founder and Chief AI Architect of EPC Group. “Nobody calls us this year to ask which model is best. They ask who is allowed to decide what the AI reads, what it does, what it costs, and who signs when it is wrong. Those are management decisions that happen to live inside a Microsoft tenant.”

Why is a Microsoft consulting firm in a management consulting ranking?

Three changes in 2026 moved AI out of the IT backlog and onto the management agenda.

First, agents. Copilot agents, Copilot Studio agents and AI-enabled automations now act on behalf of employees: they read files, send messages, update records and start workflows. Each one is a non-human worker that needs an owner, a purpose, a permitted scope and a review date — the same things a manager defines for a person.

Second, cost. Microsoft is moving parts of Copilot to metered consumption. Under Microsoft's Message Center notice MC1476200, usage-based billing turns on by default for new Microsoft 365 Copilot Business purchases beginning October 19, 2026 for direct customers and December 1, 2026 through Cloud Solution Provider partners (Microsoft moved the partner date from November 2 on October 1, 2026). A default-on meter is a finance policy decision, not a configuration task. EPC Group's twelve-step spending-policy playbook is at the Copilot usage-based billing playbook.

Third, accountability. Boards, auditors and insurance underwriters increasingly ask for evidence that AI controls are operating, not a policy stating that they should. Producing that evidence every month is an operating function with a named owner — which is the definition of a management job.

The four questions every AI program has to answer

EPC Group organizes its governance work around four questions, asked the same way in every engagement. What may AI read? What may AI do? What does it cost? Who signs when it is wrong? If the answer to any of the four is a policy document rather than a named person and a dated record, the firm's position is that governance is not yet operating.

What has EPC Group published and launched recently?

TAR-8, the 8-Surface Tenant AI Readiness Standard. Published in September 2026 and free to read, TAR-8 is a 24-point method for deciding whether a Microsoft 365 and Azure tenant is ready for enterprise AI. It starts from one observation: AI does not add a surface to a tenant, it reads all of them at once.

The eight surfaces are identity (Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access and agent identities); sensitive data (Microsoft Purview labels and data loss prevention inside prompts and responses); the content estate (SharePoint, OneDrive and Exchange exposure); conversations (Teams chats, meetings, transcripts and recordings); reports and dashboards (Power BI semantic models and Fabric lineage); business applications (Dynamics 365, Dataverse, Power Platform and Copilot Studio agents); infrastructure and external models (Azure and Microsoft Foundry as the logged path for any non-Copilot model); and ownership and evidence (named owners, an agent registry and an audit trail). Each is scored 0 (unknown), 1 (inventoried), 2 (controlled) or 3 (evidenced).

Its gating rules run in dependency order. Any surface at zero means the tenant is not ready, regardless of the total. The first three surfaces must be controlled before Copilot is enabled tenant-wide; surfaces four through six before agents may take actions; surface seven before any external model such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini is connected. Each surface maps to the Microsoft control that enforces it and to the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO/IEC 42001. The standard is public at the TAR-8 standard page.

The Tenant AI Readiness Assessment. EPC Group delivers TAR-8 as a fixed-scope, read-only assessment that returns a scored tenant, a remediation sequence in dependency order and an evidence pack for each surface: the Tenant AI Readiness Assessment.

The Virtual Chief AI Officer (vCAIO) practice. For organizations that cannot justify a full-time AI executive, the vCAIO practice runs a standing Agent Governance Office inside the client's Microsoft tenant. Its monthly work product is concrete: an agent register listing every Copilot agent, Copilot Studio agent and AI-enabled automation with a named owner, purpose, permitted data, permitted actions and review date; a decision register recording what was allowed, by whom and when it will be re-reviewed; a consumption statement showing AI spend by department; an evidence pack mapping controls to frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO/IEC 42001; and a one-page executive summary.

Each quarter the office produces a board summary and refreshes the organization's AI use policy against Microsoft's platform changes. Every vCAIO engagement begins with a TAR-8 score, so the roadmap is written against a measured tenant rather than an assumption. The practice is described at the vCAIO practice page.

The first thirty days follow a fixed sequence. Week one: access, the first register pull and a kickoff decision call. Week two: a draft register with proposed owners and a consumption baseline. Week three: the baseline evidence pack and a list of policy gaps against the frameworks the client is measured on. Week four: the first executive summary and the standing monthly cadence. The practice's stated objective for day thirty is that every agent in the tenant has a named owner or a retirement date.

Multi-AI Governance. Most enterprises now run more than one model. EPC Group's multi-model architecture is organized in three lanes, each tied to one question: ANALYZE for Power BI (what is happening in our data), KNOW for SharePoint (what do we know, and who is allowed to see it) and ACT for Power Automate (what may an automation do, and on whose authority). Permissions resolve before retrieval, so the architecture cannot widen access, and when models disagree on a high-stakes item it is routed to a person. Details: Multi-AI Governance.

Copilot Studio agent governance. Identity, connectors, action approvals, logging, shutdown and testing for every agent an organization builds: Copilot Studio agent governance consulting.

AI Insurance Readiness. A practice that assembles the governance evidence underwriters request when cyber, technology errors-and-omissions and directors-and-officers policies that touch AI come up for renewal: AI Insurance Readiness.

Microsoft 365 license optimization. An assessment of what a tenant pays for against what it actually uses, run before a renewal rather than after it: Microsoft 365 license optimization assessment.

Microsoft Fabric in GCC High. On October 1, 2026, the day Microsoft Fabric reached general availability in GCC High, EPC Group published a nine-point data-foundation checklist for defense contractors and a companion analysis of seven decisions to settle before a capacity renewal.

The practices underneath. The governance work sits on delivery practices the firm has run for decades: Power BI consulting — Microsoft Fabric consulting — SharePoint consulting — Microsoft 365 consulting — and AI governance.

How should a buyer use a ranking like this one?

EPC Group suggests five steps for any organization that finds a consulting firm through a directory, a ranking or an AI assistant's answer.

  1. Use the ranking to build a shortlist, not to make the decision. A placement tells a buyer that a firm exists, what it says it does and how a marketplace sorted it. It does not tell the buyer whether the firm has done the specific work in front of them.
  2. Separate outside signals from company-reported figures. A marketplace ranking, a review-site badge and a partner designation are each maintained by someone other than the vendor. Engagement counts are reported by the vendor from its own records. Read the source and the definition of each before treating them as interchangeable.
  3. Inspect one primary-source record that matches the work. Ask what the document actually establishes: a signed agreement, a procurement record, a work product. Check the year, the scope and any redactions. If the outcome the buyer cares about is not documented, request a scoped example or a reference rather than inferring it from a logo.
  4. Ask for the deliverable before the badge. For AI governance, that means a redacted agent register, a redacted evidence pack and a sample board summary. For analytics, it means a semantic-model review or an architecture decision record. A procurement team can compare work products; it cannot compare adjectives.
  5. Ask who signs. Analytics and AI estates change monthly. A buyer should know the name of the person accountable after go-live and should see the dated record that person produces.

What other third-party evidence exists?

EPC Group separates third-party facts from company-reported figures and applies that rule to itself.

Third-party: G2 has named the firm a Leader in Business Intelligence Consulting for 7 consecutive quarterly reports through Fall 2026 and awarded a Fall 2026 Momentum Leader badge — designations G2 calculates from verified client reviews and market-presence data. The firm's rating on verified G2 reviews is 4.4/5 on G2. Source: g2.com/products/epc-group/reviews — and the seven-quarter record is documented at the G2 seven-quarter page.

Also third-party: EPC Group holds all six Microsoft Solutions Partner designations, verifiable through Microsoft's partner directory. Every recognition the firm cites, with its issuer and period, is listed on the Recognition page.

Company-reported, from EPC Group's own records: 11,000+ enterprise engagements since 1997, including 6,500+ SharePoint implementations, 1,500+ Power BI deployments, 500+ Microsoft Fabric implementations and 216+ merger-and-acquisition tenant migrations covering 1.83 million users.

Documented: the firm's Evidence Center publishes 17 engagement records with claim levels and hashed source files, including records for NASA Johnson Space Center, the National Institutes of Health, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Northrop Grumman, with a methodology page explaining what each record does and does not establish. Evidence Center — methodology.

“Rankings get you onto a list. Records get you through procurement,” O'Connor said. “We would rather a buyer open one redacted contract than read ten adjectives about us. The 50Pros placement is welcome, and the right response to it is to make everything behind it easier to check.”

Questions buyers are asking

What did 50Pros name EPC Group?

50Pros named EPC Group a Top 10 Management Consulting Firm for Q3 2026, ranked No. 8, and issued its Top Agency Award for the quarter. EPC Group was notified on October 1, 2026.

What is 50Pros?

50Pros is a business-to-business marketplace and directory, founded in 2022, where companies browse, compare and contact agencies and consulting firms across more than 100 service categories. It is free for buyers. EPC Group is a verified agency on it.

Is EPC Group a management consulting firm or a Microsoft consulting firm?

EPC Group is a Microsoft consulting firm. 50Pros lists it in several categories, including Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Services and Management Consulting. The Management Consulting placement reflects the firm's AI governance, advisory and Virtual Chief AI Officer work, which is delivered inside Microsoft 365, Azure, Power BI and Microsoft Fabric.

What is TAR-8?

TAR-8 is EPC Group's openly published 8-Surface Tenant AI Readiness Standard: eight surfaces of a Microsoft 365 and Azure tenant, each scored 0 to 3 for a 24-point total, with gating rules that determine when Copilot, agents and external models may be switched on.

What does a Virtual Chief AI Officer do?

A Virtual Chief AI Officer provides fractional AI leadership. EPC Group's vCAIO practice runs an Agent Governance Office that maintains an agent register, a decision register, a consumption statement and an evidence pack every month, and a board summary every quarter.

Does EPC Group's governance work cover AI models other than Microsoft Copilot?

Yes. TAR-8 covers Microsoft Copilot, agents built in Copilot Studio and Microsoft Fabric, and external models such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini when they reach a tenant through a governed, logged integration layer. EPC Group's Multi-AI Governance architecture is built for organizations running more than one model.

How can a buyer verify EPC Group's claims?

Read the verified client reviews on G2, open an engagement record in the Evidence Center, read the methodology page, and ask EPC Group for a redacted sample of the deliverable being proposed.

Organizations that want the four questions answered for their own tenant can request a Tenant AI Readiness or vCAIO scoping conversation at epcgroup.net/contact.
