Viva Engage Enterprise Deployment
Yammer successor with new capabilities. This is the EPC Group 4-phase enterprise deployment playbook.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Viva Engage and how does it relate to Yammer?
Viva Engage is Microsoft's enterprise social network — the direct successor to Yammer, which was rebranded and expanded starting in 2023. Same underlying network infrastructure and community concept, but with new features: Storyline (Twitter-like posts from individuals), Leader Corner (dedicated executive-communication space), Answers in Viva (Q&A with AI-augmented search), and native Teams integration. Existing Yammer tenants automatically became Viva Engage; the migration was tenant-configuration only.
What is the community governance framework?
Four categories every enterprise deployment needs. (1) Community lifecycle — creation, ownership, retirement. Best practice: request-form-driven community creation via Power Automate, quarterly ownership review, automatic archival of dormant communities after 6 months. (2) Community type policy — Public / Private / Restricted (multi-tenant guest handling). (3) Content moderation policy — Trusted Communicator role, escalation to Compliance for policy-violating content, Purview integration for retention. (4) Executive Leader Corner governance — who has Leader Corner rights, how executive communications are approved before publish.
What is Leader Corner and when should we enable it?
Leader Corner is a dedicated Viva Engage space for executive leaders (CEO, C-suite, senior VPs) to publish authoritative company-wide communications. Distinguishes executive messages from regular community posts. Best fit: enterprises >2,000 employees where executive-communication cadence and reach matter. Enable it for a small group first (5-10 senior leaders) with Communications team support for message drafting; expand to broader leadership as the discipline proves. Do NOT enable Leader Corner without executive communications support — badly-drafted executive posts erode trust more than they build it.
How does Viva Engage integrate with Copilot?
Two integrations. (1) Microsoft 365 Copilot indexes Viva Engage community content — Copilot can summarize community discussions, surface relevant threads, draft community posts. Subject to the same sensitivity label + DLP for Copilot policies as other M365 content. (2) Answers in Viva — Viva Engage's native Q&A feature uses AI to match questions to previously-answered similar questions. Different surface from M365 Copilot but shares the same conversational AI foundation.
What is the adoption pattern?
4-phase over 6-12 months. Phase 1 (Weeks 1-4): tenant enablement + governance framework deployed + pilot community for the change management team. Phase 2 (Weeks 5-12): 5-10 pilot communities per business unit, executive Leader Corner soft launch, adoption metrics baseline. Phase 3 (Months 4-6): broad enablement, Answers in Viva launched, integration with Teams meetings. Phase 4 (Months 7-12): community consolidation (retire dormant communities), leadership rhythm established (weekly executive Storyline post cadence), integration into performance conversations (managers reference community engagement as a leading indicator).
