How to Evaluate a Business Intelligence Consulting Partner (and What G2 Data Actually Tells You)
Last updated by Errin O'Connor, Founder & Chief AI Architect, EPC Group
Vendor badge walls are close to meaningless on their own. What is worth reading on a G2 profile is the underlying data: how recent the reviews are, whether reviewers look like your organization, whether placement holds across quarters or appeared once, and whether anyone has published a criticism. A multi-quarter streak is the single hardest signal to manufacture.
Key Facts
- A badge image proves nothing on its own — click through to the grid and the reviews.
- Review recency matters more than review count: a three-year-old profile describes a firm that no longer exists.
- One Leader quarter can be a cohort accident; a multi-quarter streak survives reviewer turnover and methodology changes.
- A profile with no critical reviews is a warning sign, not a strength.
- Ask who staffs the engagement and what governance you are left with — G2 cannot tell you either.
The problem with badge walls
Almost every consulting firm’s website has a row of award logos near the footer. They are trivially easy to assemble, frequently years out of date, and occasionally reference categories the firm no longer competes in. A logo is an image file. It tells you nothing on its own.
The useful move takes about ninety seconds: click through to the provider’s actual G2 profile and look at the data the badge was calculated from. If a firm displays a badge but you cannot reach a live profile with reviews behind it, you have learned something already.
Four things to read on any G2 profile
Review recency. Sort by date. A profile whose most recent review is eighteen months old is describing a firm with different staff, different partners, and possibly a different delivery model. Consulting quality is carried by people, and people move.
Reviewer profile. G2 exposes reviewer company size and industry. Ten enthusiastic reviews from twenty-person companies tell you very little about whether a firm can run a regulated, multi-thousand-seat programme. Look for reviewers who resemble you.
Consistency across quarters. This is the one most buyers skip. G2 recalculates placement every report period. A firm that appears once has had a good quarter; a firm that holds placement across many has a delivery system. Ask the vendor directly which periods they have been placed in — the answer is checkable.
What reviewers criticise. An honest profile contains critical reviews. If every review is unqualified praise, either the sample is tiny or the reviews were curated. Read the two-star reviews first; they tell you where a firm strains. That standard applies to our profile as much as anyone else’s.
Why streaks are the strongest single signal
A single quarter can be a cohort accident — one large happy project landing several reviews in the same window. A multi-quarter streak cannot be produced that way. It has to survive reviewer turnover, changes in G2’s own methodology, shifting market conditions, and the ordinary attrition of consulting relationships. It is the closest thing in this market to a longitudinal measurement.
For disclosure, since this is our site: EPC Group has held G2 Leader status for 7 consecutive quarters, Fall 2024 through Fall 2026, including a Triple G2 Win across three categories in Fall 2025. The full ledger and the reasoning are in the announcement, and the reviews themselves are on our G2 profile. Apply the four tests above to it exactly as you would to a competitor’s.
Questions to ask any BI consultancy before signing
- Who actually staffs this? Ask for named people and their allocation. Ask whether the person in the room will be on the project.
- What is the commercial model? Fixed-fee against a defined scope behaves very differently from time-and-materials when scope moves. Ask which applies and what triggers a change order.
- What governance am I left with? A dashboard estate with no ownership model, no certification process, and no capacity plan becomes someone’s problem within a year.
- What happens after go-live? Ask what hypercare covers, how long it runs, and what the steady-state support model looks like.
Where BI evaluation is heading: AI-readiness
The evaluation criteria are shifting. Whether Copilot and AI workloads succeed on your data estate is determined almost entirely by things that were decided earlier: semantic model quality, naming and metadata discipline, row-level security design, and whether governance was built in or bolted on. A partner’s depth in Microsoft Fabric architecture and Power BI governance is now a leading indicator of AI outcomes, not a separate workstream.
Engagements are fixed-fee and fixed-scope; pricing is confirmed after a scoping call. The more useful early conversation is about your data model, not your budget.
Frequently asked questions
What does a G2 Leader badge actually mean?
It means a provider scored highly on two axes G2 measures independently: satisfaction, calculated from verified customer reviews, and Market Presence, calculated from size and market-reach signals. Leader placement is computed by G2 from that data. It is not an application, a submission, or a paid placement.
How is G2 Leader status earned?
Customers write reviews; G2 verifies them before they count. Each quarterly report period recalculates placement from the reviews and presence data current at that time. A provider can be a Leader one quarter and drop out the next if review flow or satisfaction falls.
How many consecutive quarters has EPC Group held G2 Leader status?
7 consecutive quarters, Fall 2024 through Fall 2026, including a Triple G2 Win across three categories in Fall 2025.
How should I compare business intelligence consulting firms?
Read the reviews rather than the badges: check recency, whether reviewers resemble your organization in size and industry, whether placement is consistent across quarters or a one-off, and whether the profile contains any criticism at all. Then ask the operational questions — who staffs the engagement, what commercial model applies, what governance you are left with, and what happens after go-live.
