Microsoft Build 2026 — The CIO Perspective

Microsoft Build 2026 delivered the biggest set of enterprise platform changes since Build 2024. This is the EPC Group enterprise CIO recap from on-the-ground coverage and direct conversations with Microsoft product leaders.

The 5 Most Important Announcements for Fortune 500

1. Microsoft 365 E7 + Agent 365 GA (May 1, 2026). The new top-tier M365 SKU at $99/user/month bundling E5 + Copilot + Entra Suite + Agent 365. Agent 365 is the new agent governance plane (Defender SPM + Entra CA + Purview classifier + admin center). This is the single largest licensing change since M365 E5 launched in 2016. EPC Group has prepared the full E7 vs E5 vs E3 decision framework.

2. Microsoft Foundry multi-model expansion. Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Studio) now provides first-class access to GPT, Claude (via the Microsoft-Anthropic partnership), Llama, Mistral, and the open-source frontier through a single Entra ID + Purview-governed surface. This is Microsoft's answer to multi-model architecture without abandoning the Microsoft governance plane.

3. Microsoft Fabric Copilot improvements. Power BI Copilot now generates DAX, creates visuals, and summarizes datasets across Direct Lake-mode Lakehouses. Fabric Copilot also extends to Notebooks for natural-language Spark code generation and Pipelines for ETL flow synthesis. The cross-workload Copilot story closes the gap with Snowflake Cortex.

4. Entra Suite improvements. Entra Internet Access (SWG) and Entra Private Access (ZTNA) gained features that close the gap with Zscaler and Cloudflare Access. Entra Verified ID expanded to support employee credentials + education credentials + B2B partner trust. These are bundled into M365 E7.

5. GitHub Copilot CLI evolution + Microsoft engineering consolidation. GitHub Copilot CLI now ships agent-loop execution + file editing + multi-step task planning. Microsoft's internal Experiences and Devices team moved from Claude Code to GitHub Copilot CLI by June 30, 2026 — the consolidation pattern every enterprise will face. EPC Group has the multi-model AI strategy analysis.

What This Means for Enterprise Strategy in 2026-2027

Three patterns emerge from Build 2026:

Pattern 1: Microsoft is consolidating the governance plane. Agent 365 + Defender XDR + Purview + Entra Suite + Sentinel = one governance ecosystem for identity, data, security, agents, and AI models. Enterprises running parallel governance stacks (one for Microsoft, one for AWS, one for GCP) will face increasing friction.

Pattern 2: Multi-model is winning over single-model. Microsoft Foundry's expansion + the GitHub Copilot CLI / Claude Code consolidation both point to the same architectural answer: standardize on one development + governance surface, keep model portability inside that surface.

Pattern 3: Bundle economics dominate. M365 E7 at $99 (or $84.15 CSP promo through Dec 31, 2026) bundles enough value that buying components separately is rarely the right answer for enterprises over 200 Copilot seats.

EPC Group Recommendations Post-Build 2026

For Fortune 500 EPC Group works with, the post-Build 2026 priorities are:

  1. Evaluate M365 E7 vs current SKU — for Copilot rollouts above 200 users, E7 saves money + adds Agent 365 governance
  2. Plan Agent 365 deployment — Defender Agent SPM + Entra CA for agents are operationally required at agent scale
  3. Migrate Power BI Premium to Fabric F64 — Copilot + Direct Lake + OneLake unification
  4. Consolidate AI development tooling — GitHub Copilot CLI for Microsoft-stack developers, Microsoft Foundry for model access
  5. Refresh Conditional Access + PIM policies — Entra Suite improvements warrant a policy framework review
