Microsoft Copilot inherits SharePoint permissions. 87% of enterprise M365 tenants have severe permission drift. 6-phase methodology: Discover + Classify + Prioritize + Remediate + Enforce + Monitor. SharePoint Advanced Management ($3/user/month) provides Data Access Governance reports, Restricted Content Discoverability, sensitivity label enforcement. EPC Group tiers: Discovery $15K/2wk, Governance Accelerator $95K/8wk, Enterprise Cleanup $250K-$500K/20-40wk. All engagements include senior consultant leadership + business-owner engagement + post-engagement governance reviews.
Microsoft Copilot inherits SharePoint + OneDrive + Teams permissions. If a file lives in an over-permissioned SharePoint site (e.g. set to "Everyone except external users"), Copilot surfaces it to any employee who asks. EPC Group discovery finds 87% of enterprise M365 tenants have severe permission drift accumulated over 5-15 years. Common patterns: legacy site-collection over-shares, migration-flattened NTFS permissions, "just this project" sites never re-permissioned, OneDrive folders shared broadly, Teams private channels misconfigured. Copilot exposes years of accumulated drift in seconds.
EPC Group methodology: (1) Discover — Graph API + PowerShell inventory of all sites, sensitivity, permission scope, size, last-activity. (2) Classify — tag sites Highly Confidential / Confidential / Internal / Public + sensitivity-label taxonomy. (3) Prioritize — Highly Confidential sites with broad shares first (highest risk). (4) Remediate — remove "Everyone except external users," reduce group-based access, apply sensitivity labels, enforce Restrict-Access for regulated content. (5) Enforce — deploy SharePoint Advanced Management (SAM) + Data Access Governance (DAG) reports for ongoing monitoring. (6) Monitor — quarterly DAG review + drift alerts + Copilot query auditing.
Timeline depends on tenant complexity: (1) Small tenant (under 500 sites) — 4-6 weeks. (2) Mid-size (500-2,000 sites) — 8-12 weeks. (3) Large enterprise (2,000-10,000 sites) — 12-24 weeks. (4) Very large (10,000+ sites) — 20-40 weeks. Time drivers: number of sites, migration history (files migrated from file shares carry heavy legacy permissions), sensitivity classification requirements, and business-owner participation (site owners must approve permission changes to legitimate collaboration content).
SharePoint Advanced Management is a Microsoft add-on ($3/user/month) that provides: (1) Data Access Governance (DAG) reports — flag over-shared sites, potentially broken links, unused sites. (2) Restricted Content Discoverability (RCD) — hide low-value sites from Copilot without changing permissions. (3) Site Lifecycle Management — automated site archival for stale content. (4) Sensitivity label enforcement at container level. SAM is highly recommended for enterprises deploying Copilot; it lets you constrain Copilot query surface without touching legitimate permissions. Included in most EPC Group Copilot Readiness engagements.
Restrict Access is a SharePoint site setting that restricts Copilot query scope even if user technically has SharePoint access. Use cases: (1) Highly Confidential legal / HR / finance sites where only specific named users should see content via Copilot. (2) Regulated content (PHI, MNPI) where compliance requires explicit access grants for AI processing. (3) Board-level content that should not appear in general Copilot responses. Restrict Access does NOT change SharePoint permissions — it adds a Copilot-specific gate. Users with SharePoint access can still directly navigate + open files; Copilot just cannot use them for responses.
EPC Group SharePoint Governance Accelerator ($95K, 8 weeks) delivers: (1) Full Graph API + PowerShell inventory of all sites + permissions + sensitivity. (2) 6-phase remediation of top-priority over-shared sites. (3) Sensitivity label taxonomy + rollout to top 500 sites. (4) SharePoint Advanced Management deployment + DAG report configuration. (5) Business-owner training + delegation model. (6) Ongoing governance playbook + runbook. Deliverable: Copilot-ready SharePoint environment + measurable reduction in Copilot exposure risk. Fits alongside Copilot Readiness Assessment ($25K) as the remediation phase.
Three engagement models: (1) SharePoint Discovery Assessment ($15K, 2 weeks) — Graph API + PowerShell inventory + risk quantification + remediation roadmap. (2) SharePoint Governance Accelerator ($95K, 8 weeks) — 6-phase remediation for top-priority sites + SAM deployment + business-owner training. (3) Full Enterprise SharePoint Cleanup ($250K-$500K, 20-40 weeks) — comprehensive site-by-site remediation for 2,000+ site environments. All engagements include: senior consultant leadership, weekly progress reviews, business-owner engagement (not just IT), and post-engagement quarterly governance reviews.
