Key facts

  • Status: Azure Kinect DK was discontinued by Microsoft in October 2023. Existing units continue to work; the Azure Kinect SDK and DK firmware receive maintenance updates through 2027.
  • Original price: $399 USD (at release in 2019).
  • Primary use cases: computer vision, body tracking, spatial analytics, speech recognition, and mixed reality applications.
  • Azure services integration: Azure Cognitive Services, Azure Digital Twins, Azure IoT Hub, HoloLens 2.

Key applications

Healthcare and rehabilitation

  • Physical therapy motion analysis — track patient joint angles during rehabilitation exercises.
  • Fall detection for elderly patients — real-time body tracking triggers alerts when a fall is detected.
  • Ergonomic assessment — monitor worker posture on production floors and flag risky movements.

Manufacturing and industry

  • Ergonomics monitoring — detect when assembly workers adopt high-strain postures before injury occurs.
  • Dimensional measurement — use depth data for quality control and object dimension verification.
  • People counting and occupancy — monitor station occupancy in real time without camera-based identification.

Retail analytics

  • Customer traffic heat maps — track dwell time and movement patterns through store zones.
  • Queue management — detect and alert on queue depth at checkout or service counters.
  • Shelf interaction analytics — track which product zones receive the most attention.

Mixed reality and HoloLens integration

  • 3D environment mapping — capture spatial data for HoloLens 2 holographic overlay applications.
  • Gesture recognition — detect hand and body gestures for hands-free industrial interfaces.
  • Digital twin feeds — stream spatial data to Azure Digital Twins for real-time facility models.

Alternative depth sensors (post-discontinuation options)

Because Azure Kinect DK was discontinued in 2023, new projects should evaluate these alternatives.

Sensor Technology Best for Price range
Intel RealSense D455/D456 Stereo depth Lower cost, indoor/outdoor, computer vision $150–$300
Stereolabs ZED 2i Stereo depth + AI Long-range stereo, outdoor use, built-in AI $499–$699
Orbbec Femto Bolt ToF (Azure Kinect-compatible) Drop-in Azure Kinect replacement — same SDK $349–$399
Microsoft HoloLens 2 Time of Flight + depth Mixed reality, hands-free industrial UI $3,500
Luxonis OAK-D Stereo depth + onboard AI Edge AI, embedded vision, robotics $250–$400

The Orbbec Femto Bolt is the closest drop-in replacement for existing Azure Kinect DK solutions — it uses the same Azure Kinect SDK and produces compatible depth data.

Outdoor use limitations

Azure Kinect DK uses a Time of Flight depth sensor sensitive to infrared interference from sunlight. Fully exposed outdoor deployments are not supported. Covered outdoor areas (loading docks, covered walkways) work with reduced performance. For true outdoor use, choose stereo vision or LiDAR-based sensors.

Frequently asked questions

Is Azure Kinect DK still available to buy?

Microsoft discontinued the Azure Kinect DK in October 2023. Remaining inventory may be available through third-party resellers. Microsoft continues to support the SDK and firmware through the device lifecycle. The Orbbec Femto Bolt is the recommended replacement for new projects requiring Azure Kinect SDK compatibility.

Does Azure Kinect DK work with Azure AI services?

Yes. The SDK integrates with Azure Cognitive Services (Face API, Speech SDK, Computer Vision), Azure IoT Hub for telemetry streaming, and Azure Digital Twins for spatial modeling. These Azure services remain active and are not affected by the Kinect DK hardware discontinuation.

What SDK does Azure Kinect use and is it still supported?

The Azure Kinect SDK (C/C++, Python, C#) is available on GitHub and NuGet. Microsoft has committed to maintenance support through 2027. The Body Tracking SDK, which provides 32-joint human skeleton tracking, is also included. The Orbbec Femto Bolt is compatible with the same SDK.

Can Azure Kinect DK run on Ubuntu?

Yes. The Azure Kinect SDK supports Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04. Microsoft provides official .deb packages for the SDK and Body Tracking dependencies. Windows 10/11 is also supported. macOS is not officially supported.

How does Azure Kinect compare to HoloLens 2 depth capabilities?

HoloLens 2 includes a built-in Time of Flight depth sensor optimized for hand tracking and environment mapping in a wearable form factor. Azure Kinect DK has a larger sensor array optimized for fixed-mount use with wider FOV and higher RGB resolution. They serve different deployment scenarios.

Engagement Models: 2026 Considerations for Kinect Dk Pricing And Features Spatial Computing Developer Kit

Microsoft Solutions Partner status (six designations: Data and AI, Modern Work, Infrastructure, Security, Digital and App Innovation, Business Applications) replaced the legacy Microsoft Gold Partner program in 2022. EPC Group held Gold Partner status from 2003 to 2022 (the oldest continuous Gold Partner in North America) and currently holds all six Solutions Partner designations; a credentialing footprint shared by fewer than 50 firms globally and typically used by Microsoft field teams as a vetting gate for enterprise Customer 0 nominations and named-account engagements.

EPC Group 29-year Microsoft consulting heritage matters specifically because Microsoft platform decisions today are layered on top of 25 years of architectural choices: Active Directory schema decisions from 2005 affect Microsoft Entra ID Conditional Access policy design in 2026; SharePoint 2003 information architecture decisions affect Copilot grounding quality in 2026. The firms that can navigate that depth (fewer than a dozen Microsoft Solutions Partners in North America) have a structural advantage on enterprise Microsoft migrations.

Decision factors EPC Group evaluates

  • Enterprise architecture roadmap
  • Cost optimization and licensing audit
  • Microsoft platform capability assessment
  • Vendor consolidation analysis
  • Compliance and governance posture review
